A Brief History

It has been established in researching the band's history that Wingates has made over 100 recordings since 1915 and has featured in countless additional recordings with other bands and artists. The band has also had a prolific broadcasting history. As well as appearing on BBC radio including regular appearances on BBC Radio 2's 'Listen to the Band', Wingates has featured in various brass TV programmes during the past 30 years.

Nyman Brass, Michael Nyman- It was a privilege for the band to be involved in this new and exciting project. Michael Nyman is one of the world's leading minimalist composers and Wingates are honoured to bring his music into the brass band world. Michael came to hear the band rehearse and was amazed at how his music sounded and at the spirit of the band. His music, for those who are not familiar with it, is exciting, challenging, rewarding and at times deeply moving. The CD features music from the films "The Ogre", "The Libertine" and "The Draughtsman's Contract" and a Nyman favourite "In Re Don Giovanni".  The colour and dynamic range available to the listener are astonishing and beautiful. This CD is a must for anyone interested in the brass sound and minimalist music.

Something completely different - Minimalist music written by Michael Nyman has been wonderfully arranged by the band's associate composer John Parkinson.

Asway in a Manger - The much requested Christmas CD is finally available. Popular brass band arrangements of well-known Christmas tunes along with some traditional carols sung by the Bolton Catholic Musical & Choral Society form the most part of this CD. We also include two new pieces written by John Parkinson, the title track "Asway In A Manger" and "O Come, O Come Emmanuel". The CD also features Andrew MacDonald (cornet) in "The Holy City".
