Biography:
Ewan is Principal Tuba with Britain's longest-established permanent professional
symphony orchestra, the Hallé, Tutor in Tuba at the RNCM, JRNCM, Manchester
University and Director of Hallé4Brass. He has previously held the positions of
Principal Tuba with the Ulster Orchestra and held teaching posts at Queens
University Belfast and Ulster University.
Over the last thirty years his passion and enthusiasm for performing has taken him
around the world playing with most of Britain’s great Orchestras including: London
Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic
Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Academy of St
Martin in the Fields, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony
Orchestra, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Irish
Chamber Orchestra and Manchester Camerata.
Conductors Ewan has had the privilege of working with include: Claudio Abbado, Sir
Simon Rattle, Pier Boulez, Sir George Solti, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Coin Davis, Tilson
Thomas, Andréa Previn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Mariss Jansons, Charles Dutoit,
Richard Hickox, Paavo Bergland, Heinz Holliger, Sir Charles Makerras, Gennady
Rozhdestvensky, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Sir Neville Marriner, Vernon Handly, Yan
Pascal Tortelier, Sir Mark Elder and Yehudi Menuhin.
As a soloist, Ewan has been heard performing with many varied ensembles,
including numerous performances on Radio 3 with the Ulster Orchestra, including:
Vaughn Williams Tuba Concerto, Edward Gregson Tuba Concerto, John Williams
Tuba Concerto and the World Premier of Steve Pickett Landscapes for Tuba.
Ewan has been involved with Brass Bands since his early teens, cumulating with
playing for the Brighouse & Rastrick Band whilst studying at the RNCM. During his
time in Ulster he developed his conducting association with many Bands including:
Comber Sliver, Laureldale, Drogheda, Dungarvin. Since returning to the North of England he has worked with: Besses O’th Barn, Ashton, Beaumaris, Warrington.
Over the last decade Ewan’s pioneering work with the Ministry of Justice has led to
the ground breaking project Hallé4Brass, this led to him being nominated as a Daily
Mirror ‘Peoples Award’ finalist in 2007, 2008 Butler Trust Award for ‘skills in
education’ and he received, from the Queen, the Order of the British Empire, MBE in
the 2010 New Year Honours List.

Although a young conductor Adrian has amounted a vast experience of competing at Championship level. Adrian is a percussionist who has played with a range of bands including Yorkshire Imps, YBS, Wingates and most recently Fairey(Geneva).
He began conducting at Salford University under Nigel Weekes and quickly took over Blackley Band. He has conducted a number of bands including Eagley and Goodshaw aswell as working with the Irish National Champions Drogheda. Adrian has taken a sabbatical from Blackley Band to be able to accept "this fantastic opportunity with Wingates".
